The American Civil War, also known as the War Between the States, was fought from 1861 to 1865 as a contention between slavery and states' rights. The phrase House Divided when speaking of the Civil War refers to the country being unable to stand with such a deep schism present. The phrase brother against brother often comes up when describing the conflict.
Many innovations came out of the war including photography as journalism. The University of St. Joseph Art Museum currently has an excellent exhibit on the subject. Read about it here.
